~ Right before school started, my good friend, Katie, was visiting Venice with her mom and brother and I decided to go visit! Venice was about 2.5 hours away from Milan and I wasn’t sure if it was too far for a day trip…but, it was SO worth it!
Of course, there’s so much to see in Venice and I’ve heard that you really need a full week there to see it all. I want to go back as soon as busy season ends! Just taking the water taxis and seeing the beautiful old buildings from the water was enough to make me swoon. I couldn’t get enough of the colors, the beauty, the authenticity of the whole city. It feels surreal, it’s almost too beautiful to be true!
After lunch on the water, we decided to head over to the Venetian islands of Murano and Burano (which was a bucket list place for me!). On Murano, we had the opportunity to watch a glass blower create a few works in one of the oldest glass blowing studios in the world. It was so amazing to see! He made us a cat 🙂 We then hopped on a ferry over to Burano (all of those colorful houses), which exceeded my expectations in every way! I want to go back there for a full weekend! It’s such a tiny island, historically known for it’s lacemaking (which we witnessed happening outside), but I feel like there are probably so many little gems to discover there. I’ve always loved COLOR and the pinks and yellows of those houses were just so brilliant and bright!
A large part of the day was spent ferrying and taxiing to and from Venice and the Islands, but I LOVED that! The ferries and the water taxis were some of my favorite parts of the day, not only because I was able to be out on the water (of course), but also because some of the sights from the water were just stunning! What I’m learning about living here in Italia is that excitement truly lies in the journey, not the destination. Some of my favorite parts of the day (the special moments that happen) happen during my commute or going from one place to another. I’m currently commuting over an hour to school until I find a more permanent place close by. I really love the suburban family feel of Bovisa, the neighborhood where I am now. This week, I got home early enough one evening to witness all of the grandparents of Bovisa pushing their grand-babies around in strollers – it was everywhere and it was so sweet! Another evening, a group of middle school girls rushed over to me and started speaking in Italian – I wish I knew what they had to tell me! I’m loving the sweet everyday moments that I see here in Milan the most.
Thanks to Katie, Briggy, and Anne for such a special day in Venice, Murano, and Burano! I can’t wait to go back to these magical places you introduced me to!
With love, gratitude, and molto happiness,
