~ On this episode of Glitter Upper, I’m giving you a peek inside my bedroom! And not my full bedroom, because truth be told, my curtains and gold curtain rod are sitting next to my gold bamboo mirror unhung on the other wall (because…steel studs?).
As you might know, Glitter Upper is my real life home decor series where things are definitely less than perfect. My aim is to show you the good AND the bad (anyone catch the instagram story of me attempting to hang my living room curtains? DRY WALL EVERYWHERE). It’s honest, slightly humorous, and hopefully incredibly relatable.
I absolutely LOVE interior design and home decor, however I often feel I cannot relate to many bloggers who share their perfectly decorated homes. MAKE NO MISTAKE, I will have a perfectly decorated home someday (and hopefully Vineyard cottage and ski cabin?), but that day just isn’t right now. When I left my townhouse in CT to move to Milan for my masters, I left a LOT behind. I really was glad I did. I anticipated being there for closer to 2.5 years (as long as my visa would allow), and knew that my furniture would not fare well in storage for that long. Plus, I had the BEST roommate ever (shoutout to Martha!) who also had very similar taste and wanted her to keep and enjoy these things.
And so, when I moved to Columbus, I fully started from scratch. Which was fun! And daunting. Adjusting to Columbus was maybe the hardest move that I made. I still am not “in love” with the city, and I think that feeling alone made me reluctant to decorate and make it really feel like home when I knew it wasn’t. However, I now have come to realization that it’s healthy to “nest” a little bit. In order to give Columbus a truly fair shot, I needed to do more with the beautiful apartment that I am renting.
And so, here is my room! It’s certainly not perfect, but I’m happy that it’s taken a turn for the better. My inspiration was a subdued and classic 70’s Palm Beach. Who doesn’t love banana leaves and pineapples?!
~ How It All Came Together ~
~ When I first moved in, I had to do it all solo, which can definitely be daunting. I’m slightly embarrassed to say that I went with my same Ikea duvet cover that I had in Milan. I knew that I loved this Pottery Barn duvet set, very similar to one that I had in CT and loved. Initially I planned to monogram each pillow, but then I found the SAME set at the Pottery Barn Outlet for 50% off (score!) and still haven’t taken them to get monogrammed yet!
Next, I needed to find the perfect throw pillows to complete the look but COULD NOT find ANY that I liked online. And so, I took to Etsy! I loved the thicker canvas cotton that Becky from Eleme Studios used and I asked if she could create pillow covers with pom poms in one of the banana leaf prints she carried. They came all the way from England and I love them!
I wanted to balance it all out with a soft striped pillow. Finding a classic pinstripe pillow in a softer blue shouldn’t be so hard to find right? Wrong! I was only able to find what I wanted on Etsy, and while it’s technically a “patio pillow,” it’s exactly what I was hoping to find!
I have always loved the balanced feeling that double nightstands provide and I love the deep drawer of this nightstand! Next I wanted to pull the navy from the duvet set by complimenting it with ginger jar chinoiserie patterned lamps. I love this lamp that I found from Target at an incredibly affordable price!
Next, I felt that I could use a BIT more storage (yes….my bed is on risers and under it is filled with space bags and storage containers…). I wanted a POP of light blue and was so happy when I found this light blue tufted storage bench! It’s perfect for all of my sheets and extra blankets! Target has a ton of great storage benches at really friendly price points. I know this one above is almost sold out, but it’s worth taking a gander through their new storage benches as well (personally, if I could do it again, I would get one of these!)
Lastly, MY PINEAPPLE ART! I get so many compliments on these guys. I love pineapples, and really wanted 2 or 3 framed for the odd space over my bed between the two small windows. I ended up finding a print I loved on Etsy of 3 watercolored pineapples and splicing it into 3!
~ I am SURE there is more I can do to all 4 windows and the carpet that came with the apartment is certainly an eye sore…however It makes me happy to walk into this room after a long day and isn’t that what it’s all about in the end? Baby steps over here!
I hope that you are all surviving this time at home! Let me know what else you would like to see on the blog during this time!
Gratefully with love,
Rhiana
